Predictive Voltage Control for Direct Matrix Converter fed System without Load Side Modeling

Predictive control techniques have substantially alleviated the complexity of controlling direct matrix converters. However, inaccurate knowledge of the system model parameters can lead to poor converter performance especially when the source or load side parameters are susceptible to variation. This paper presents a method to address these issues in the form of a predictive voltage control strategy that enables usage of the converter for generic applications, wherein the nature of load is unknown and a mismatch in source side model is corrected using an appropriate reference current generation scheme. Moreover, due to lack of intermediate energy storage elements in a matrix converter, any disturbance occurring on the supply side is reflected at the load side terminals. The performance of the system is investigated under such conditions to validate robustness of the proposed method. Further, the simultaneous control of the input and output stages is carried out while controlling the switching frequency in the system and a strategic cost function formulation is adopted to optimally control multiple objectives. Simulation results to illustrate the effectiveness of the paper are presented in detail.
