Examining Power Factor Correction Boost Converter Feedback Control Using SIMPLIS

Switching power supplies equipped with power factor correction (PFC) control schemes are an essential part of modern power conversion architectures, as they provide high power factor and low total harmonic distortion. Boost converters are the most commonly used topology in PFC circuits. In order to design the feedback controller for a PFC circuit, simulation is a useful tool to investigate the circuit using both time-domain and frequency analysis. This paper investigates and compares the theoretical small-signal model of a PFC boost converter and its simulation results using circuit simulation in SIMPLIS. The transfer functions of a non-ideal boost converter and feedback controller are derived, and the equivalent circuits are simulated. Comparison of theoretical and simulated results is used to verify the accuracy of the small-signal modeling and investigate stability.
