A Wideband High-Gain Resonator Cavity Antenna with 2-Level Stepped Ground

In this paper, we present an easy-to-fabricate wideband high-gain resonator cavity antenna (RCA) comprising a dielectric slab as partially reflective surface (PRS) and a simple 2-level stepped flat ground structure. The ground consists of a circular plane as the middle part and a higher annular edge plane. The antenna achieves the high gain over 15 dBi from 12.1 to 15.2 GHz and a peak gain of 19.4 dBi at 12.5 GHz. Compared with other bandwidth enhancement techniques by modifying the ground shape, the proposed method further simplifies the antenna structure, hence lowers the fabrication cost without sacrificing much performance. It can find applications in long-distance highly-directive communication systems.
