Mixed EDD and MEDD: A Low-Jerk Control Method For Semi-Active Suspension

This paper presents a control method named "Mixed EDD and MEDD control" for semi active suspension to reduce the acceleration and acceleration rate (jerk) of the sprung mass. A MEDD (Modified Energy-Driven-Damper) control method which can suppress the jerk of sprung mass very well is first proposed in this paper via introducing the acceleration rate of the sprung mass to the performance function. It has been shown that EDD and MEDD control have complementary characteristics: EDD provides large benefits for restraining the sprung mass acceleration in low-frequency range (0-2HZ) while MEDD behave better in high-frequency range. Mixed EDD and MEDD control is then proposed which classifies the frequency range of the road profile and employs EDD and MEDD accordingly to effectively attenuate the sprung mass acceleration and acceleration rate (jerk). Using the most-used Mixed skyhook-ADD (SHADD) as the benchmark, the effectiveness and superiority of Mixed EDD and MEDD control are verified by the simulation results.
