Glaucoma Detection by Artificial Intelligence: GlauNet A Deep Learning Framework

Glaucoma disease is related to optic nerve damage that is a consequence of high intraocular pressure. Glaucoma is one of the causes of blindness worldwide and urgent measures must be taken into account. Glaucoma manifests itself as a morphological change of the optical disc, these patterns can be observed by doctors and more recently are predictable by advanced deep learning algorithms. This paper presents the design, development and testing of a novel deep learning framework that is able to identify glaucoma with very high accuracy based on fundus images of the eye. The obtained results ensure a high level of performance respectively an overall accuracy of 99.05%. The developed GlauNet deep learning framework may change the way glaucoma disease is detected by enabling AI capabilities and increasing the detection rate at early stages.
