Therapeutic Potential of Noninvasive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Burning Mouth Syndrome

Burning mouth syndrome is a pathology characterized by persistent and prolonged burning sensation, sometimes with pain, in the lingual mucosa, jugal, lips, palatine, but without the presence of any macroscopic lesion and in the absence of other local pathology or systemin (primary BMS). It mainly affects the female sex (1: 8 -1: 30 ratios, depending on the study), more frequently after 50 years, being associated with menopause, depression, anxiety-depressive disorders, mild cognitive deficit, flbromyalgia. Currently, there is no clear cause of this pathology and no specific treatment, although some therapeutic solutions have a higher success rate. In Romania, the prevalence and incidence of glossodynia cases is not known exactly, as there are only statistics at the level of oral pathology clinics in university cities. The importance of the research described in this paper results from the possibility to identify a non-invasive, cheap, reproducible therapeutic alternative that can be used in the therapy of peripheral polyneuropathy, including in cases of burning mouth syndrome (BMS).
