Adaptive Algorithm for Steam Turbine Fast Valving Based on the Equal Area Criterion and Synchrophasor Measurements

The paper describes development and testing of the adaptive algorithm of turbine fast valving control. The purpose is to ensure transient stability of a synchronous generator during a disturbance. The turbine fast valving control algorithm is synthesized based on the equal area criterion in terms of torque. Phasor Measurement Unit data was used to identify the inception of a transient event and its parameters. Adaptability of the algorithm is achieved by using minimal amount of previously obtained parameters of a synchronous generator and a power system under consideration. The algorithm was tested on the single-machine system with automatic excitation control, steam turbine and its governor being taken into account.
