The ICNIRP 2020 Guidelines and Serbian EMF Legislation

The expansion in telecommunication technologies, particularly the one using electromagnetic field (EMF), makes advances on the knowledge on EMF-tissue interaction. Hence, the International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) announced the updated guidelines – ICNIRP 2020, that should ensure protection against all recognized health hazards when population is exposed to the EMFs, in the range of 100 kHz up to 300 GHz. The newest updates to the limits are based on the improved scientific accuracy, providing in addition the limits for exposure situations that were not considered in earlier guidelines – ICNIRP 1998. One of the key outcomes of ICNIRP 2020 is also strong recommendation for countries to perform updates of their national EMF legislation in order to be aligned with the up-to-date recommendations. In that sense, this paper is intended to make a short overview of certain ICNIRP 2020 features and their reflections on Serbian EMF legislation, highlighting parts of national legislation that should be altered.
