Appendix G: Laser Displays and TV

This appendix summarizes laser displays. The primary advantages of lasers in displays are brightness and chromaticity. Several light sources are used for the red, green, and blue (RGB) including LEDs, diode lasers, second harmonic generation from solid‐state lasers, and gas lasers. The beams of each of the RGB lasers are combined into one beam by the optical system. The most promising system may be a laser backlight liquid crystal display used in head‐mounted displays. In any case, vertical‐cavity surface‐emitting lasers emitting RGB visible spectra are indispensable. The development of both red and blue lasers was driven by the optical storage market. Direct diode green lasers are currently limited in power and led to the development of VECSELs. For medium‐sized TVs, lasers are expected to develop in the future as a TV display for business use and home use, taking advantage of its low power consumption and wide color gamut.
