Designing of an Underwater Power Transmission System and Hybrid Power Supply for an Isolated Island of Bangladesh: Swarna Dwip

Since Bangladesh is a densely populated country, it requires more spaces for living purposes. Remote islands aren’t utilized much because of lack of facilities and modernization which initiates with electricity. But sooner, rather than later it will be required to use these spaces. If power can be transmitted via underwater, those islands can be connected with national grid. Moreover, hybrid power sources can be utilized for increasing reliability of the system. In this paper, a power system has been designed for such an island, Swarna Dwip, which is in dark of electricity. The power system is designed to transmit electric power to the island via underwater submarine power cable from national grid. The designed system have been equipped with a standby backup generator that has been planned for emergency use only and a PV system utilizing renewable energy to meet the power demand. Detailed calculations have been done assuming some sample values. Lastly the design has been validated by implementing and simulating in ETAP software.
