Very Thin Structure based on Metal Mesh and Saltwater with High Transparency for Windows Against Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP)

This paper presents a very thin and optically transparent structure with high SE for use as an effective EMP shielding window. The proposed structure consists of a saltwater layer held between two glass substrates and two metal mesh films (MMF) on the outside of the glass with a total thickness of less than 1.5 cm. The structure’s SE and OT are both over 80 dB and 45%, respectively, which not only exceed the military’s need for EMP shielding but also maintain the procedure of good observation. Furthermore, by using only one MMF layer, the structure’s OT can be greatly improved while the SE remains high enough to meet the needed SE for house applications. The proposed structure can be considered a good solution for transparent EMP shielding windows due to its inexpensive cost, optical transparency, robust SE, and flexible performance.
