A Graphene-based Composite for Selective Detection of Ethylene at Ambient Environment

Detection and monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are highly demanded for various applications such as environment monitoring, food quality control, and clinic treatment. Most of the commercially available sensors provide the amount of total volatile organic components (TVOC), whereas the VOCs are the combination of ethylene, acetone, ethanol, acetic acid, and formaldehyde. Different VOCs impacts human health differently. This paper presents a graphene-based composite for selective detection of ethylene using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and tin oxide (SnO
2
). Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is applied to characterise the coated sensor for a wide range (10ppb ~ 300ppb) of ethylene concentrations. The response and recovery time is 3s and 6s, respectively. Moreover, the outcomes of the cross-sensitivity test are highly promising to use the sensor for various environmental and biomedical applications.
