Protection of Road Pavement from Storm Water Runoff by Means of a Subsurface Storm Sewer

The article deals with the issues related to the drainage of water from the roadway to prevent its penetration into the pavement. The article proves the necessity of drainage as an important component in solving the problems of durability and service life of road clothes. Examples of existing drainage methods are given. Attention is also paid to the changes in the legislation, according to which at present discharge of water collected from the roadway onto the terrain is prohibited, which makes it necessary to redirect the collected water quite a long distance to the treatment facilities. An analysis of possible options for drainage in accordance with the new requirements is made. A new method of water collection and removal that is notable for its simplicity, efficiency and low cost in comparison with other methods used for the same purposes has been proposed. The advantages of this method, as well as possible difficulties arising during its implementation, are described. Attention is drawn to the imperfection of the normative base linking the depth of laying of pipelines designed to take rain and storm water runoff with the depth of ground freezing. Recommendations have been given as for determining the rain water drainage system as a separate group which has no limitations due to the ground freezing depth.
