Investigation and Design of a Measurement Based Electro-Mechanical Oscillation Mode Identification and Detection in Power Grid

In this paper, a comparison of various measurement-based electro-mechanical oscillation mode detection methods are studied. In particular, a recursive measurement-based approach for electro-mechanical oscillation mode identification is used for comparison. In this approach, depending on the data set (inputs or outputs), a detection process that automatically monitors the grid for newer or coupled oscillation modes is designed. The approach is recursive which makes the process less computationally extensive and ideal for online application and control purposes. The comparisons of all the approaches is evaluated using two power grid systems. The results and comparisons indicate that the proposed architecture can identify all modes of interest effectively.
