An Application for Validation of Power Distribution System Models in an ADMS Environment

An accurate model of a power distribution system is the foundation for model-based algorithms that ensure efficient and reliable grid operation in an advanced distribution management system (ADMS) environment. However, distribution system models are error-prone and comprehensive model validation is challenging due to: (1) lack of standard information models, (2) multiple and overlapping sources of model data, and (3) the dynamic and evolving nature of the real-world systems that models are derived from. In this paper, a framework for comprehensive validation of networked equipment models is described. The framework ensures both consistency between equipment parameters and feasibility of a model to represent observed data. A software application that implements the validation framework is under development. The application has been pre-released within GridAPPS-D, an open-source standards-based platform for ADMS application development and demonstrated on the IEEE 13-bus, 123-bus, and 8500-node test feeders.
