Online Tuning of Dynamic Equivalents for Large-Scale Power Systems Using Wide-area Measurements

To perform faster than real-time dynamic simulation for large-scale power systems, it is necessary to represent the surrounding areas of the study area as dynamic equivalents. Traditional coherency-based methods could derive aggregated generators of the external area, but the equivalents could not reflect system operating condition changes. Further parameter optimization could be applied to improve the accuracy of the equivalents. This work utilizes wide-area measurements to tune the parameters of the aggregated generators using particle swarm optimization (PSO), while preserving the structure of coherency-based equivalents. Results indicate that using this approach, accuracy of the dynamic equivalents is enhanced and more significantly, the tuned equivalents could reflect system operating condition changes.
