Haptic feedback of rotary switches for HMI: variable torque and energy profiles and MEC model aiming to solve the inverse problem

Haptic tactile feedback for Human-Machine Interface (HMI) gains in importance in many applications. One of the most common haptic interfaces is a rotary knob [1]–[5]. The haptic feedback of such knobs depends on its torque and energy characteristics (amplitude and variation profile). This paper presents an analytical tool permitting to solve the inverse problem and to design knobs with different torque and energy profiles in order to compare their haptic rending.
