A New Efficient Method for Machine Volume Reduction using Thermal Overload Capability

A new method is presented with which the actual thermal load of an existing electric machine is first analyzed for realistic application profiles and then, by means of targeted geometric variations, the greatest possible volume saving potentials are determined under which the machine can still be operated just within its thermal limits. Various scaling methods are considered, and a numerical optimization procedure is used to determine the scaling parameters that best resolve the conflict between volume reduction and the associated temperature increase during operation.
