Abstract:

In this paper, slot pole combination of a novel inherently fault tolerant multiphase winding is discovered analytically for a multiphase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) against an open phase failure. The discovered windings are capable of demonstrating three types of fault tolerant operation modes. A 16 teeth 12 poles machine is simulated by finite element method to verify the discovered characteristic. Furthermore, the finite element analysis (FEA) results show that this characteristic is independent of saturation as well as slotting effects in the iron.
