Design Aspects of a Dual Slot Layer Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine with Combined Star-Delta Winding and Thermal Analysis based on Enhanced Lumped Parameter Thermal Networks

Considering overload capability of electrical machines opens up the possibility to design machines tailored for distinct load profiles and thus reduce machine volume compared to a conventional design. In such a design process the thermal capacity is a major setscrew, as it is directly related to the transient thermal behavior. Therefore, two interior permanent magnet machines are analyzed and compared regarding their transient thermal properties in this work. The machine used as reference design carries a common distributed winding, while the second machine is designed with an unconventional dual-slot layer stator and tooth coil windings. Losses and thermal parameters are derived for both machines. Resulting operating range and transient thermal behavior is assessed by means of enhanced lumped parameter thermal networks utilizing multinode network components for improved simulation results.
