Performance Improvement of Switched Reluctance Motor Using Hybrid Excitation Method Without Permanent Magnets

Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have worldwide recognition due to their versatility, simple structure, and low maintenance cost with high torque and power capability. Recent developments are being made in SRMs which exponents its growth as a substitute for DC and permanent magnet motors. Hybrid excitation of switched reluctance motor (HESRM) improves the torque capability for variable speed applications. The HESRM methods integrated with rare earth metals adopt the permanent magnet (PM) behavior and intensify the airgap flux density. However, the HESRM method with permanent magnets suppresses the unique properties of SRM. In this paper, a new topology is introduced to enhance the average torque of HESRM without using PMs. Furthermore, the static and dynamic characteristics of the machine are examined by the 2D finite element method (FEM). The results indicate that excellent motor response is obtained with maximum average torque and minimum torque ripple and can be effectively used in electric vehicles.
