Towards an ethics in action: Art or App Design Challenge as a tool in STEM ethics education

We report on the origins of, rationale for and expected contributions of the Ethics in Action: Art or App Design Challenge sponsored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). At a time of pervasive technological growth, we suggest that it or a similarly minded intercollegiate contest could serve as a teaching tool to inspire students toward developing prosocial, beneficent apps and increase their mindfulness of the power of technology and of their societal obligation to harness that power toward the common good of humanity and of the planet.
