Multi-resource Power Efficient Virtual Machine Placement in Cloud Computing

Virtual machine placement (VMP) has become a primary concern of researchers in cloud computing environments. VMP algorithms can significantly affect the power consumption in cloud data centers. In this paper, an efficient heuristic VMP algorithm is designed. The proposed algorithm is based on multi-recourse virtual machine demands. The concept of placement is to calculate the total normalized resource demands of a single VM termed as capacity resource and use it with heuristic algorithms. As a result, a balance resource usage is preserved, and an efficient placement is achieved. The conventional first fit decreasing (FFD) and best fit decreasing (BFD) heuristic algorithms are modified using the new capacity resource factor. The new proposed algorithms are termed first fit decreasing capacity (FFDC) and best fit decreasing capacity (BFDC) algorithms. In the simulation, the proposed FFDC and BFDC algorithms are evaluated and compared with the classical FF, BF, FFD, BFD algorithms. Moreover, a comparison with two recently proposed metaheuristic algorithms is achieved. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in minimizing the total power consumption.
