Desensitizing a Slot Bow-Tie Antenna for Mobile Device Operation Close to the Human Body

This paper describes a GCPW (grounded coplanar waveguide) slot bow-tie antenna which would not have its main characteristics changed when operated close to the human body. The antenna is provided with a backplate which contributes to a 12 dB SAR (specific absorption rate) reduction when compared with the same antenna without the conducting plane, according to simulated results on CST Studio™ software. Also, the radiation efficiency when used close to the body remains at acceptable 84% while falls to 18% for the same antenna without the backplane. This novel antenna is therefore an interesting alternative to be used in applications requiring close proximity to the body.
