Adaptive Inter-Beam Granularity and Beamwidth Adjustment for 5G Beam Selection and Management

The future revision and realization of 5th and 6th generation (5G/6G) wireless communication systems seriously consider energy efficient transmitter/receiver beamforming; the associated Tx beam selection and management. The proposed schemes of adaptive inter-beam granularity and beamwidth adjustment efficiently manage the beam blockage issue, which is regarded as a primary concern of energy efficient narrow beamforming. The simulation results demonstrate the large potential of utilizing the proposed schemes to cope with the scenarios of non-line-of-sight (NLoS) wireless channels, serious beam blockage and high mobility of user equipment (UE). The schemes proposed in this paper are expected to have a constructive impact on the revision of commercial 5G system and 6G wireless communications in the future.
