A Compact PIFA for Mobile UWB Applications

In this paper, a compact ceramic-based planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) for mobile terminal ultra-wideband (UWB) applications is proposed. The overall structure of the proposed antenna consists of a radiating element, a meandered feed microstrip line, two L-shaped branches and a shorting strip. Due to the good impedance matching characteristic of the proposed radiating structure, the antenna is able to achieve a wide impedance bandwidth in a miniaturized size. By properly manipulating and optimizing the antenna’s current distribution, a better omnidirectional radiation characteristic is obtained. Results show that the proposed antenna can well operate in a bandwidth of 6.25-8.75 GHz with a compact size of 0.1675λ × 0.055λ × 0.05λ (λ is the free-space wavelength at center frequency), satisfying the UWB requirements for current advanced mobile terminal communications.
