Communications Backbone for Environment Monitoring Applications in Smart Maritime Ports— Case Study of a Moroccan Port

The maritime logistic plays a critical role in the world economy, because more than 80% of goods traffic is transported over the sea. Between the maritime routes, the maritime ports play a decisive role as hub in the entire logistic chain performance, in term of costs, time to deliver and reliability. Nowadays, we are talking about smart ports, which should use ICT (based on data collection, treatment and decision making) to improve these performances. One of the aspects that is gaining more interest is the environmental impact of maritime ports operations, which play also a considerable role in the climate change as well as on the health of the population in the neighboring regions. In this paper, we discusses the different environmental aspects that maybe considered for monitoring in smart maritime ports. For this, purpose we use a case study of a Moroccan port and discuss the wireless communications techniques that can be used for data collection and transmission.
