Gain Enhancement of the Millimeter Wave Radar Sensor Using a Composite Metamaterial Radome

A composite metamaterial (MTM) radome for 60GHz radar sensor is proposed in this paper. The composite MTM radome consists of two different structures with star and square cells. With those structures, the composite MTM radome can provide gain enhancement for the radar module. The simulated results of the antennas in package (AIP) with the composite MTM radome show a gain improvement more than 3dB compared to that without the radome. Also, measurements have been performed by using a corner reflector at a fix distance and various directions in an anechoic chamber to obtain the level of the received radar signals backscattering from the corner reflector. Good agreements between measurements and simulations are obtained.
