Experimental Validation and Performance Analysis for Simultaneous Illumination and Communication System of Indoor Commercial white-LED Lamps

The Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) not only giving illumination, but they can transmit information also. So that LED has played an essential role in Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology for indoor short-range data communication. In this paper, several commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) indoor white-light LED lamps are proposed by considering the performance metrics such as light intensity quality when VLC was adopted, and data transmission efficiency measured in terms of bit error rate (BER). To achieve the proposed VLC system, the system is separated into two parts, first part is a VLC transmitter which combining of an indoor commercial white-light LED lamp, an LED current constant driver, and a data modulation circuit. The second part is a VLC receiver that composes of a BPW34 photodiode (PD) and several signal-amplify circuits. In the experimental setup, the VLC transmitter sending digital data bitstream through optical wireless communication (OWC) channel between 20cm. to 200cm. of distances to a VLC receiver. Then VLC receiver acting as light intensity to the electrical converter.
