Parametric models for monitoring respiratory properties in lung cancer

In this work, a set of physiologically based parametric models is used to estimate mimicked respiratory impedance for a case of lung cancer. The experimental setup is based on a clinically approved prototype device for measuring low-frequency oscillatory response as an input impedance load electrical equivalent circuit. Similar in characteristics to a lung cancer patient, we examine the feasibility of model structures compared in this study by means of variations in balloon viscoelastic properties. Hence, this allows the elimination of the uncertainty introduced by the spectral overlapping of breathing of the patient as a mixed source of persistent excitation for identification. Statistical comparison between healthy lung and tumorous lung data and model parameters estimated suggests that significant differences can be captured by all proposed models. Preclinical mathematical models have been identified as helpful mechanisms in qualifying and quantifying treatment and assisting the prediction treatment strategies in patients with lung cancer.
