Importance of Lithium-Ion Energy Storage Systems in Balancing the Grid: Case Study in Turkey

Energy storage systems (ESS) become a critical hub augmenting with ultimate technologies relating non-uniform distributed primary energy generation and battery evolution trend. The recent focus and most preference of lithium-ion ESS in grid systems are owing to balance the load demand, maintain reliable and effective operation of electricity distribution networks, ensure uninterrupted power to consumers and smooth out the non-uniformity of renewable energy resources. In addition, energy storage systems offers excellent opportunities as maintaining high quality service power by alternating grid components, postponing grid investments, and preventing nodal voltage fluctuations due to mismatching generation and consumption energy imbalance. In Turkey, as well as in the World, there is an exponential growth of installed renewable energy sources which makes grid operations more complicated. Expansion of lithium-ion energy storage systems could represent an important short-term solution to support the operation and control of existing grid.. Beyond their grid flexibility capabilities, energy storage systems also have the ability to support grid operation by providing ancillary services. In this study, the effect of battery storage systems on stabilizing non-uniform renewable energy resources and grid balancing is studied through a real microgrid case. The future potential of energy storage systems in grid operations is examined considering system requirements and economic feasibility.
