Design, Modeling and Simulation of Two-Phase Induction Motor Integrated with Inverter Drive

The paper contains the comparative analytical study of single-phase and two-phase induction machine related to speed control applications. Single-phase induction motors are extensively utilized in domestic application of small power rating. The single-phase motor may be used even at higher power rating with improved performance when the capacitor gets removed from the motor. The indulgence of capacitor and centrifugal switch makes requirement of periodic maintenance which leads to poor performance and enhanced downtime. As the capacitance is frequency dependent parameter, fine speed control is also an issue with the single-phase induction motors. For achieving better performance, the concept of two-phase induction motor looks to a competitive solution for speed control applications in various industries. The single-phase induction motor without capacitor has been considered as two-phase induction motor comprising main and auxiliary windings fed with power electronic based two-phase inverter used to generate/split two phase voltages displaced at 90°. The article presents modeling and simulation of two-phase induction motor, two-phase inverter topology, switching schemes and speed control operation with two-phase inverter drive using scalar control (V/F) technique. The parametric analysis of inverter voltage, motor speed, torque profile, input current and power drawn, harmonic analysis of the input current has been included. Moreover, comparison of performance parameters with single-phase induction motor has been discussed.
