Research Opportunities for the Detection and Classification of Plant Leaf Diseases

One of the biggest threats to food security is the plant diseases that affect the majority of the food crops in the agricultural industry. Also, herbal medicine industry is suffering because many of the plants with medicinal importance are losing their lives due to deadly diseases that haunt the plants. Due to the lack of the necessary infrastructure, regions around the world lack this risk. This article is a detailed review on various noteworthy approaches and techniques utilized in the three important phases of the detection of plant diseases process. This work also compares different algorithms and methodologies utilized for image segmentation, feature extraction and classification process in the literature. Summarized challenges mentioned in this paper will provide a starting point for the researchers working in this area. The different research opportunities are also presented with their scope of work for further research and experimentation.
