Multi-modality image registration using centroid mapping

A method for the semiautomatic spatial registration of brain images generated by magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and single-photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT) is discussed. The method is based on centroid mapping and utilizes the image processing techniques of grey-level classification, mathematical morphology, connected-components feature extraction, and geometric transformation. Once registered, the images are superimposed and displayed as a single color image. The registered images allow application of multispectral tissue classification. The method is reported to be visually equivalent to manual registration performed by a radiologist.<
