Decrease of the influence of noise on precise CT-densitometry

Summary form only given. The authors present the results of an experiment designed to reduce the noise in computed tomography density images. Noise was examined from a statistical point of view, and the minimal area required for reliable density measurement was determined. It was established that density measurement of slices 5- and 10-mm thick is reliable and repeatable with an error less than +or-5 HU in an area greater than 40 mm/sup 2/, independently of scanning parameters.<
