Metamaterial Promoting 5G MIMO Antenna with Isolation Enhancement

In this paper, a single-layer metamaterial (MTM) superstrate is presented to realize the high isolation for a 5G multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna. The metamaterial cell is composed of a layer structure with an improved split-ring and a square metal mesh at different surface, which has been arranged periodically to form a meta-surface structure and placed over a 2-port MIMO antenna with an interval of 2 mm to achieve low coupling. The obtained results show that the created MIMO antenna owns a −10dB impendence bandwidth ranging from 4.77GHz to 5.08 GHz so that it covers the 5G band of 4.8∼5GHz. It also provides a low coupling of −45dB within the operating frequency bands and achieves a peak gain of 7.7dB, which is a suitable candidate for 5G indoor applications.
