A Decoupled Dual Element Reconfigurable MIMO Antenna with Improved Isolation for Wireless Applications

A decoupled two element Multi-Input Multi-Output antenna system for WLAN and X-Band downlink band (7.257.75GHz) satellite communication is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna element consists of a modified rectangular monopole and dual parasitic strips loaded with PIN diodes. Reconfigurability is achieved by changing the switching conditions of PIN diode. The radiating element provides a bidirectional and directional modes of operation. The design of MIMO antenna with improved isolation is the major challenge. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of two radiating elements which are arranged opposite to each other. Satisfactory isolation characteristics are obtained by incorporating the decoupling strips on the bottom side of the radiating elements. The proposed MIMO antenna has nine different radiation patterns by changing the PIN diode conditions. The proposed MIMO antenna is suitable for both WLAN and X-Band downlink band (7.25-7.75GHz) satellite communication as it exhibits acceptable MIMO performance.
