Minimizing the Probability of Error in Cognitive Radio Networks

The growing demand for the spectrum has made it necessary to utilize the available resources in an efficient and sustainable manner. The cognitive radio (CR) system is an approach where the unutilized spectrum of primary user (PU) is used by the secondary user (SU). The SU compares PU signal with a threshold to detect the freely available channel. Thus, there is a need for an appropriate threshold. In this paper, we have find an optimum threshold by minimizing the probability of error. We have shown conventional approach where the sensing is done for τ units and data is transmitted for T-τ units while in the proposed approach both sensing and data transmission is being done for the entire frame time T using handshaking approach. Further, we have compared their performance parameters. It can be observed that under the condition of optimal threshold, the probability of error in the conventional approach is 0.14953 while it is reduced to 0.01485 in the proposed approach.
