Fourier analysis of digital STEM images of rat lens in the study of transparency

Fourier components of the microstructure of the rat lens of varying turbidity were measured for the range 100-1100 nm from scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images. The results indicate that the spectral energy content of these images decreases in the 100-200-nm range, stays approximately constant in the 200-300-nm range, and increases in the 300-1100-nm range, as one moves from a transparent area of the lens to an opaque area. A total increase of 19% in the spectral energy content for the 200-1100 nm range accounts for the opacity.<
