Dispelling Misconceptions and Characterizing the Failings of Deepfake Detection

In this article, we highlight problematic trends in our understanding of and approaches to dealing with deepfakes. We discuss five common misconceptions surrounding deepfakes and adopt a security perspective to make three recommendations to avoid backward-facing research efforts.
