Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy based Controllers for Grid Connected PV-Wind-Battery Hybrid System

Renewable energy-based grid-connected systems are popular nowadays. The integration of two or more renewable energy-based power generation sources can provide reliable power to the grid. The photovoltaic (PV) and PMSG based wind power generation systems are famous worldwide. However, wind power varies with the velocity of wind, and PV power depends on solar irradiance. Hence power generation from wind and PV will be always fluctuating due to atmospheric and weather changes. These changes are rapidly changed and unpredictable, an energy storage device such as battery with proper controller is required to minimize the fluctuations in power generation from PV and wind. Compared to the PI and Mamdani Fuzzy, Takagi Sugeno-Fuzzy (TS-Fuzzy) controller can work effectively for rapid changes in the system. The TS-Fuzzy-based DC and AC side controllers are proposed in this paper. The novel controllers are developed for the Wind-PV-Battery-based hybrid grid-connected system. The proposed controllers can help to compensate reactive power required by the load, reduce the harmonics due to nonlinear load and maintain balanced grid currents during unbalanced load connected to PCC as well as can maintain constant DC link voltage with proper tracking schemes for tracking maximum power from PV and Wind. The same inverter can also work to transfer active power to the grid as well as act as the maximum power tracker of PV when the State of Charge of the battery reaches its upper limit. Extensive results are presented with MATLAB to test the controllers under different case studies.
