Survey of metal oxides for coatings of ultra-stable optical cavities

A survey of the optical properties and mechanical loss of metal-oxide thin films is reported in a search for optimum materials for mirror coatings for gravitational wave detectors. Ta
2
O
5
and GeO
2
doped with TiO
2
achieve the lowest absorption and mechanical loss with post-processing annealing.
