BIM for Energy Efficiency Training Requirements in the Context of a Developing Country: The Case of Saudi Arabia

Building Information Modelling (BIM) paves the way to more effective multidisciplinary collaborations, with a total lifecycle and supply chain integration perspective. BIM is also helping the sustainability agenda because the digitalisation of product and process information provides a unique opportunity to optimise energy efficiency (EE) related decisions across the entire lifecycle and supply chain. This study aims to broaden the BIM training agenda to support Saudi Arabia's building EE agenda. It requires a broad awareness and expertise in BIM practice across different asset types and different roles in the industry. This study will endeavour to enhance the skills, qualifications and capabilities of construction practitioners (from high professionals to blue-collar workers). This will increase the market penetration and adoption of key technological development in BIM, given the timeliness of the need for training in combined green and functional performance engineering. Our interviews focus on understanding and utilising BIM as a toolset to optimise energy in the construction industry across the lifecycle of a building. As such, the authors focus on demonstrating the benefits of BIM in maximising EE and sustainable outcomes.
