Wireless ECG device for heart rhythm monitoring during dental extractions-a pilot study

Wireless electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring devices are useful for detecting heart rhythm disorders and provide insight into the patient's medical condition. Dental procedures produce fear, stress and anxiety and could trigger underlying, unrecognized cardiovascular disorders. In our pilot study, negative P-wave and discordant final oscillation occurred in all four phases of the procedure in nine out of twelve patients. Tachycardia occurred during the anaesthetic application in 50% of patients who received local infiltration anaesthesia group and 33% of patients from the inferior alveolar nerve block group, and also during the extraction phase in 33% of patients from the local infiltration anaesthesia group. Our data suggest that cardiovascular changes due to dental procedures are seen even in healthy individuals. Routine patients' screening with these devices during stress-inducing procedures could help identify those with unrecognized cardiovascular risk.
