Coupling of Euler Eulerian and Euler Lagrangian Spray Methods with Chemistry Kinetics for Modeling of Reactive Flow and Pollutant Formation

During energy transition, internal combustion engines continuously develop in terms of pollutant reduction and energy efficiency increase. In modern engine engineering, the development is performed through experimental research and utilizing different computational approaches. Therefore, to contribute to the development and analyze the transient processes occurring within the engine combustion chamber, a new computational method combining the Euler Eulerian multi-continuum approach and detailed chemistry kinetic was used. Such an approach was previously verified and validated against spray and combustion processes modeling in the constant volume chamber, and the approach was successfully employed for modeling a single direct injection diesel engine case. The approach was compared to the widely used Euler-Lagrangian spray approach. The generated computational model considers liquid fuel injection, jet disintegration, droplet atomization, evaporation processes, vapor fuel combustion, emission formation and swirl motion. The purpose of the present research is to evaluate the capabilities of two different methods for modeling spray, combustion and emission processes for different engine operating points. For both modeling approaches, the calculated results, including the mean pressure traces, released heat and emission concentrations, are in good agreement with the available experimental data.
