Background Equalization Algorithm Based on Target Echo Characteristics in Reverberation Background

The reverberation interference had always been a difficult problem for active sonar. In this paper, the mean weighting and the variance weighting methods were proposed to filter the active sound images by taking advantage of the spatial scale characteristic and the stability of the target echo. While keeping the target echo, reverberation interference is greatly compressed. The processing results of lake test data show that the background is purified perfectly which lays a solid foundation for the independent detection with low false alarm rate. The calculation of proposed methods is small and the performance is stable, which is easy to apply in the project.
