Integrated Wireless Communication and mmW Radar Sensing System for Intelligent Vehicle Driving Enabled by Photonics

The similarity of the RF front-ends between wireless communications and radar systems drives the integration of communication and sensing. An integrated wireless communication and mmW radar sensing system for intelligent vehicle driving is proposed here. The proposed system is implemented by photonic mixing and frequency doubling via a sharing transmitter, which is characterized by simple and compact structure. A 2.3-Gbit/s error-free BPSK signal at Ku-band is successfully generated. Besides, accurate range and velocity detection can be simultaneously realized by a frequency-doubled dual-chirp LFM signal at mmW-band.
