OTFS Performance Over Different Measured Vehicular 60 GHz Millimeter-Wave Channels

Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation has recently received much attention, especially in the context of high mobility communication. By modulating symbols in the delay-Doppler domain, OTFS aims to exploit full diversity in both, what makes it a promising candidate for implementation in vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication systems. This paper investigates the performance evolution of OTFS, when applied over the real, measured vehicular channels, characterized by different channel characteristics. Furthermore, a performance comparison of Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) versus OTFS has been studied. Our results confirm the feasibility of applying OTFS in vehicular communication scenarios. Hence, as the diversity in the delay-Doppler domain can be exploited, OTFS shows an advantage compared with OFDM, especially when applied in harsh channel scenarios. However, the gain achievable by implementing OTFS is strongly correlated with the channel characteristics, and applications in the scenarios with a dominant line of sight (LOS) component do not provide any significant performance gain.
