Wetlands in Urban Contexts: A Case of Bhoj Wetland

Wetlands are one of the highest productive systems on earth and contribute significantly to the ecosystem. With the increase in the growth rate in urbanization, wetlands in urban areas are changing rapidly and have already disappeared in some areas. In fast developing cities, wetlands experience various physical, social and ecological pressures. The current study aims to analyze the urban area expansion in Upper Lake Catchment, known as Bhoj wetland, with the help of temporal analysis using Remote Sensing and GIS. The study employs a framework to identify the driving forces responsible for the changes to the wetland. This is an attempt to provide area specific suggestions to the policymakers for sustainable development in the Bhoj wetland area.
