The Application of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSar) on Damaged Area Mapping: The Case of the 2020 Taal Volcano Eruption

Innovative remote sensing techniques through the adoption of satellite earth observations for disaster risk management and mitigations have been achieved in recent years. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques have been extensively utilized for land applications such as terrain deformation analysis during the occurrence of natural hazards. This paper presents an approach for the creation of a damage proxy map (DPM) after the 2020 Taal Volcano eruption based on coherent change detection technique. The mean and standard deviation of coherence difference were used to define a threshold that successfully generated the DPM. The DPM was qualitatively validated through field investigation and showed a substantial agreement with 89% overall accuracy. This study confirms that InSAR technique applied to Sentinel-1 data is a valuable tool for mapping damaged areas.
